Overview
Hope Brook is located 85km east of Port aux Basques, Newfoundland, within the Avalon Zone of the Appalachian Orogen. BP-Selco made the Hope Brook discovery in 1983 and an open pit and underground mine was put into production in 1987. The Hope Brook Mine operated from 1987 until 1997 and produced 752,163 ounces of gold during that time. As a result of its historical production, Hope Brook has significant infrastructure in place including an operational 28-person camp, and 1,100m airstrip, an ice-free docking facility and an on-site substation connecting the project to the Provincial electrical power grid.
The Hope Brook gold deposit is a high-sulfidation epithermal gold deposit hosted by highly altered sedimentary and volcano-sedimentary rocks of the late Proterozoic. The main gold zone at Hope Brook is comprised of a group of tabular to lensoid silicified zones that show a continuously mineralized, northeast trending strike length of approximately 2km. The mineralized corridor as currently defined by drilling measures about 100m in width and mine workings have an aggregate dip extent that exceeds 400m.
Big Ridge Gold continue to pursue resource expansion at the project, discovering near surface mineralization to the south of the existing Resource as well as an up-dip extension to the 240 Zone. Future work plans at Hope Brook are planned to include investigations into the copper mineralization, which was economically extracted historically and could warrant future further economic study.
